SRD Straightening Reins – July 2020
by Maria Strmsek | Jun 24, 2020 | Community
As Summer unfolds at the SRD Ranch and the quarantine is being lifted, clients and volunteers are slowly returning while adhering to the restrictions still in place. Ranch Crew teens enjoy helping with the SRD Therapy Herd and the animals are responding with love and excitement. The barn is being painted a cheery red and the chicken coop is almost complete with its addition of window flower boxes. The SRD school-site visitation program is being restructured to meet demands in the event that the junior and senior high schools don’t reopen in the fall.
During this COVID-19 crisis, not-for-profit foundations needed to realign their thinking about maintaining virtual communication with their clients and donors. New strategies post-quarantine, will force the foundations to think more collaboratively in order to continue their missions. SRD keeps reaching out to organizations with similar missions to provide that support and hopefully expand services.
SRD was visited by both Alex and Angela Padilla, their family and Charlene Swayze and her daughter during the Family Friendly Ranch Time program. Mrs. Padilla is the founder of FundaMental Change, an organization whose mission is to make a difference in the lives of those living with mental illness in underserved communities. Since its inception, she has continued to work tirelessly with her events to bring awareness to remove the stigma surrounding mental disorders. She was excited to witness the work that SRD has been doing with children and families who are suffering with their own mental health challenges utilizing the equine-assisted learning method.
Charlene Swayze and her husband, Don, started the Swayze Foundation as a commitment to provide scholarship opportunities in art, sports, equestrian and animal therapy to individuals with any and all types of disabilities. Their Foundation has partnered with multiple organizations to provide support and enhance their mission. Both families need to be applauded for their passion of service to others and it was an honor to have them visit SRD. We’re looking forward to working together in the future, please visit our website to see what we are all about: www.srdstraighteningreins.org

THE SWAYZE FOUNDATION giving to help others!
Thankful for the wonderful Aplaca Fur.
My Tom and I would like to see more Alpacas in Acton as part of a 10 acre farm that is permaculture based. Goal is to create organic, healthy food for ourselves as well as show others how they can do the same. My brother Tom is very active with Meals on Wheels, The Fire Department , Permaculture and a number of areas. He’s just a really great dude! The fur is going to be a gift for my brother as he wants Alpaca as well as many other animals to be part of his Acton Farm! Look forward to seeing you soon (Tom and I both). Thank you for all that you & Donny do and of course for Patrick! The 3 of you are bringing lots of love and joy!

My name is Jennifer Zimmer I was blessed to be the recipient of the Swayze Foundation sponsorship. I am a single mother of a busy 14 year old working two jobs. I was having a hard time finding time to take care of my health. My weight was getting out of control and I found myself with very little energy. Getting this sponsorship to attend KB Fitness has giving me a new found energy and a jump start to a healthier life. Two months later I am down a total of 20 pounds. I am so thankful for the verity of classes offered at KB Fitness, they offer some I had never tried before though loved being able to do different classes each day. Everyone at KB’s was super friendly and I didn’t feel judged, but encouraged. Thank you Swayze Foundation and KB Fitness, I am forever grateful.
God Bless you

On behalf of California Spectrum Care, we want to thank the Swayze foundation for sponsoring our wonderful trip to the petting zoo. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit that specializes in helping individuals with developmental disabilities. We are always looking for fun and exciting experiences that our clients can partake in and enjoy. It is especially difficult to find new places that are catered to our individuals since we are 100% community based. Part of the difficulty is having to find places that are accepting of our demographic and can take a large group. Despite these difficulties, the Swayze foundation was able to help us out. It is safe to say our clients, and employees, had a blast during our private tour of the petting zoo. We got to see and pet a bunch of different animals and even learned a few things. Overall, it was a great experience for the individuals we serve and to this day was one of best "Fun Friday" outings. We hope to visit there again and want to thank the Swayze foundation for keeping us in their hearts and mind!

Thank you Charlene and Don Swayze and the Swayze Foundation for the kindness you share daily with so many and for the hat you sent, Sebastian loves it.
He is now 4 and was diagnosed with Autism. We are starting him for early
intervention and he has had his first therapy treatment last week. He loves
his pool, going thru the car wash and hats. I know it's a different journey
we are learning now but hopefully through this program he will have the
best chance at achieving all he wants in life. Much Love.

Thank you Patrick, Charlene and the Swayze Foundation! I love my hat - such an awesome gift and in Patrick's jovial, cheeky way there had to be a pic of my young colt, Cracker wearing it and Rambo, my kitten had to be in it too. He loved cats too!

SWAYZE COMMEMORATIVE BENCH
Swayze Commemorative Bench - Oak Forest Park, Houston Texas~
The story behind the bench-
This originally started with Charlene Swazye's idea to erect
a memorial bronze sculpture for the Swayze family in a Houston
city park and she had already been working with the parks department on it.
Then Yvonne De Armas (Parks and Recreation Dept) put in a request to the
city for a park bench and approval. It was approved as the Swayze family
commemorative bench and Yvonne stated that it was because of Charlene
wanting to do something for the Swayze family that she put the request in.
After that Charlene worked for months with the city of Houston Parks and
Recreation Department getting the funding, and donating her time, money and talent
for the funding and also for the Festival of Abilities. Charlene's goal was
always to create a commemorative tribute to the Swayze's. You might also recall
that Don, Patrick and his family all grew up in the Oak Forest Park area.

LEAVING A LEGACY
THE SWAYZE FOUNDATION IS MAKING THINGS HAPPEN!
"Thank you Swayze Foundation for your donation to our family. We are a duel military veteran family who volunteer in our community. My husband and his service dog pictured on the right have volunteered with the local girls softball league for 3 years and helps other veterans know what to do to help them receive their benefits and help getting service animals. My children and I work in our churches Ministry for children for disabilities. My 13 year old loves hanging out and talking with the teens or helping with the younger children. My 12 year old has been working on learning sign language for the last 6 years and helps me with lessons. The younger two just make friends and that is enough. Thank you so much for all that you do."
THE LEGACY CONTINUES
WHAT THE SWAYZE FOUNDATION SUPPORTS
February 2019 - THE SWAYZE FOUNDATION brought several horses to a care facility for special needs people. So much Joy was spread that day! Funded by Charlene Swayze!
Tessa! SWAYZE style!
The SWAYZE FOUNDATION has partnered with Hanger Clinics to help out children and adults like Tessa! Keep on dancing Tessa! SWAYZE style!
Just two years ago, when a deadly infection spread across Tessa puma's left side of her body, doctors had to remove her leg above the knee to save her life. Against all odds, 8 year old Tessa has returned to her love of dance with hopes to become a dance teacher and inspire others that no matter what happens in life, you must always keep fighting for your dreams. We love you Tessa - a special thank you to Tessa's Hanger Clinic prosthetist, Adam Engstrom whose incredible care and support has helped make Tessa's dance dreams a reality.

The Swayze Foundation, partnered with the Tim Tebow Foundation and this year's “Night to Shine” were at over 1700 churches and venues worldwide! Our good friends at Temecula Carriages proudly were a part of it too! Spectacular night to shine for all!
Thank you so much for not only offering a fun little outing for my kids and I, but also for being so wonderfully patient and informative with my son! We all had a great time getting outside. It’s a hard time right now for little ones and you can only tell them so much as not to overwhelm or worry them.
This was very appreciated and special. Thank you for your kindness and for sharing your beautiful and well behaved animal friends!
